How the Phoenix Climate Affects Your Pool (and What to Do About It)

Clear pool water and steps at a Phoenix home

Owning a pool in the Phoenix area is different from owning one almost anywhere else. The water, the sun and the weather all push a pool in particular directions, and a few steady habits go a long way. Here is what we see most often, and what you can do about it.

Hard water leaves its mark

Valley tap water is often high in minerals like calcium. In the desert heat, water evaporates from a pool quickly, but the minerals stay behind and slowly build up. Over time you may notice white scale along the waterline, cloudy water or a rough feel on the plaster.

What helps:

  • Test calcium hardness and total alkalinity regularly, not just chlorine and pH.
  • Brush tile lines, steps and benches so scale has a harder time setting in.
  • Ask your technician what balance suits your pool, because the right targets depend on the surface.
  • If scale has already built up, a professional cleaning or an acid wash may be the next step.

Strong sun burns through chlorine

Intense sunlight and heat break chlorine down quickly. That is why a pool can look perfect in the morning and turn cloudy or green a few days later. Warm water also encourages algae, and at the peak of summer pool water can climb into the 90s.

A stabilizer, called cyanuric acid, protects chlorine from the sun. Too little and the chlorine disappears fast, but too much can make chlorine less effective, so stabilizer needs testing as well.

Rule of thumb: test first, then treat. Adding chemicals without knowing the numbers is guesswork.

Circulation matters just as much as chemistry. Many pools need the pump to run longer in summer than in cooler months, and a clean filter helps the water move and clear the way it should.

Dust, wind and monsoon storms

Monsoon storms and dust events can dump leaves, sand and debris into a pool in minutes. Skimmer baskets fill up, filters work harder and the water can turn hazy overnight. After a storm, work through it in this order:

  1. Remove leaves and large debris with a net before running the cleaner.
  2. Empty the skimmer and pump baskets.
  3. Brush the walls, steps and floor to loosen dust and algae.
  4. Check the filter pressure and clean or backwash the filter if needed.
  5. Test the water and rebalance it. Heavy debris often calls for a shock treatment.

One safety note: stay out of the pool and away from the equipment while there is lightning nearby.

Equipment works hard here

Pumps, filters, heaters and cleaners can run for most of the year in this climate, so wear and tear adds up. These are the signs we would not ignore:

  • A pump that is louder than usual or struggles to hold its prime.
  • Filter pressure that climbs faster than normal.
  • Water that never quite clears, even when the chemistry looks right.
  • Wet spots, drips or puddles around the equipment pad.
  • A pool cleaner that stalls or stops moving.

Catching these early often means a smaller, less disruptive repair than waiting for something to fail in the middle of summer.

A simple weekly routine

  1. Skim the surface and empty the baskets.
  2. Brush the walls and steps.
  3. Test the water and adjust as needed.
  4. Check the filter pressure and look over the equipment.

If you would rather spend your weekends in the water than beside it, that is exactly what weekly pool service is for.

When to call a professional

Some jobs are best left to a technician. Give us a call if the water is green or cloudy despite treatment, if equipment is noisy or leaking, or if scale and stains keep coming back. Our team also includes scuba-capable technicians, so many underwater repairs can be done without draining your pool.
